Not a Mirror Image
Man is supposed to have been created in the image of God, correct? What does the creation account given in Genesis say, something along the lines of in the image of God He created them, male and female? So, let us consider some of the attributes of God, for if we are in His image it just might behoove us to study His character traits as presented in the Bible in order that we may better understand ourselves.
What are some of the better attributes of God's personality and character? Well, there is creativity if you consider the creation in general. Sociability if you consider the creation of man. Diversity if you consider the variety found in nature AND in human thought and philosophy. Protective if you consider the pillar of fire that traveled with the children of Israel as they fled Egypt. The list goes on and on, correct? But are there any bad attributes?
What is part of life but a grand collection of attributes and ideals and habits and thoughts and things that stand in contrast to each other? For everything that IS, for everything that exists there can usually be found something opposite and this is no different when it comes to God. For all of the good qualities that God is said to possess, to include love, when it comes to the opposing qualities it is God's anger that should concern man the most.
Are you in the image of God? If you wish to be counted as being made in the image of God all of His finer attributes sound swell, but that most negative attribute of anger often quells and trumps the happiness and love. Anger has a way of changing an individual, a group, a family, a belief, a nation...even a God. You name it and it is highly likely that if anger is present the situation WILL be affected negatively as will people, outcomes, responses...everything.
The bottom line is that the greater the grasp of anger on a person/situation the greater the damage done by the vicious imprint left by the anger.
Anger itself CAN be useful but it must be used sparingly lest the abuse of such anger metastasize into an absolutely horrific character trait that, once out of control exhibits a voracious appetite for the total control of others. At its very worst anger can drive the individual/individuals into a dark place that commands, demands, directs, steers, and guides everything and everyone by fear. This anger sees and hears and feels and wants nothing more than more of itself and this ALWAYS ends one tragic way: in full-blown rage and death.
Anger is God's number one problem. The imbalance and imperfection suffered by God because of His recurring bouts of absolute rage and the depth of His anger have not only marred what could and should be very good lessons and messages in the Bible, but this most wicked of attributes has placed a terrible stranglehold on mankind.
Anger kills and we see this every day in some form or other. While this is the truth it must also be remembered that there is also great good in the world and great love that are both readily available and experienced by many. Look inside of yourself and not just because it sounds like a nice thing to do, but because to change something that is affected by anger or that is the effect of anger, well...you are best served by starting from within.
When it comes to starting from within you should take a look at what you believe and why you believe it. Do you believe in a God of love or do you believe in a God of rage? A good clue would be for you to listen to the things you are praying for. Not too long ago I heard a friend of mine praying fervently that God unleash His wrath on the gays/lesbians and on the politicians who support legislation FOR equal rights for the gays/lesbians.
Unleash His wrath. That is what she prayed for, that God bring down the mighty who pursue all things against God, and then raise up all those who are humble and who adhere very tenaciously to the Word of God. It wasn't necessarily just the part about asking for God to unleash His wrath but how she said it. "Lord, unleash your wrath! Show them your terrible anger! Strike down the mighty who care not for your Word, Lord! Be merciful and replace those who are humble in Your Word and in Your eyes into the places of power and leadership! Bring this country back to where it was founded, Lord, on your word!"
Show them your terrible anger? Have you ever wondered what God's terrible anger looks like?
Jeremiah 36:7, says, "Perhaps they will bring their petition before the LORD and will each turn from their wicked ways, for the anger and wrath pronounced against this people by the LORD are great."
Ezekiel 7:12, says, "Yes, the time has come; the day is here! Buyers should not rejoice over bargains, nor sellers grieve over losses, for all of them will fall under my terrible anger."
Job 16:9, says, "God hates me and angrily tears me apart. He snaps His teeth at me and pierces me with His eyes."
Lord, unleash your wrath? Have you ever seen God's wrath unleashed?
Psalm 78:49, says, "He cast upon them the fierceness of His anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them."
Lamentations 4:11, says, "The LORD gave full vent to his wrath; he poured out his hot anger, and he kindled a fire in Zion that consumed its foundations."
Ezekiel 5:13, says, "Thus my anger will be spent and I will satisfy my wrath on them, and I will be appeased; then they will know that I, the LORD, have spoken in my zeal when I have spent my wrath upon them."
Yes, I am aware that there are many opinions in the differences in which the LORD or GOD is supposed to have intended these statements to mean. The point is still the same. Lots and lots of anger, and lots and lots of wrath. Explain it any way you wish. Make every excuse possible as to why the perfect God seems to have a great deal of trouble with His anger and His wrath and how such causes Him to behave.
Many people truly believe that humans deserve this anger and wrath from God. Some people go even further and seem to think that they can behave in an angry and vengeful and mean and disgusting manner towards their fellow man because GOD has instructed them to do so and GOD is righteous and perfect in His anger and wrath.
Some people even kill their fellow man with the horrible, insanely delusional idea that they are acting on the righteous anger and instruction from God; the purity of God's wrath gives them the right to do terrible things in the name of God and God's anger...because such is God's judgment...
...after all, God is perfect, even in His anger.
The truth is, and thank goodness for this, not everyone who believes in God and Jesus or Allah are consumed by the supernatural hate of their chosen divine being. But make no mistake about it, there are many people who have this serious God-driven anger 'defect' in their belief repertoire. Sadly, many people who think like this do not want to hear how some people do terrible things in the name of God, no way. If you believe in God and love God and obey God...well then, dammit!! You just go right on ahead and do everything He tells you to do, and everything angry preachers of His gospel of disaster preach to you to do.
That's right. Let that divine anger within you bubble over as you conspire with both the seen and the unseen to harm, maim, or even kill those you (or the Bible, or any interpretation of the Bible for that matter) hold to be contrary to God and therefore an abomination. Abortion doctors and nurses, women who opt for abortions, leaders of gay and lesbian rights movements, gays and lesbians, politicians who support legislation that is deemed contrary to God, individuals or groups holding any faith NOT based on the Bible.Go right on ahead at full speed and don't worry about the angry things that an angry God tells you to do because that anger is just the flip side of the magnificent love of God...
...go right on ahead. Be the dangerous tool manipulated by an angry God. Remember to preach great and grand love first, but if people do not respond always fall back on holy wrath. Fine. Do it. Then, after you are done hurting or maiming or mistreating or killing whomever it is that an anger-driven God or some equally angry whacked out preacher told you to kill...hey, you go right on ahead and pick up that shovel and start digging your own grave...
...because for all of that spiritual fervor and holy and righteous anger, even hope and peace and unfettered love that you truly think you represent you seem to have forgotten that anger kills. Your faith or the angry God of your faith may be informing or instructing you to do various terrible deeds, and that you will have absolution for such; you were doing God's work. That STILL does not hold you exempt from the bottom-line reality of anger...
...anger kills.
